The concept of totally removing your furniture just to get a little movement in the day seemed so outlandish at first. But I decided before I could really comment on the lifestyle, I had to try it myself. For one week, I needed to wholeheartedly embrace the furniture-free lifestyle, then I could decide whether the trend should stick.
People like to help, and they want to get rid of their stuff without having to pay someone to take it away. And most people would prefer their old stuff find a nice new home rather than end up in the city dump. This piece of advice goes for anything you need; dishes, small appliances, toys, books. Don’t be afraid to ask and you’ll often be surprised what you can get for free.
Clothes, Shoes & Accessories
Ashley Furniture has a program called Hope to Dream, where they give free beds to children and families in need. The program is a great one that I wish more furniture stores would do to help those who most need it. Visit this page to find out if you qualify and to find a store near you that participates. Each nonprofit that takes used furniture donations may have different requirements for what they do and don’t accept. A torn, soiled, stained, or otherwise damaged item will not be accepted in most cases. In addition to these nationwide charities, there may be organizations local to your area that also offer free donation pickup for your gently used items.
It's where I got my furniture, my books, a lamp, some binders, a mattress, a mover. On a student's budget, Craigslist is a goldmine; a vast, virtual garage sale where quality is questionable but the price is right. It's great for old fashioned people like me who prefer to buy things from people but enjoy the convenience of finding them online. It's great for just about anyone-and therein lays the problem.
Day Seven:
Ask your friends to ask their friends and family for furniture for you. Check your local community calendar or website to learn about upcoming events. And, the Gift Card Exchange section is another good place to check, since you can turn that gift card into free furniture.
Not that I needed one at the time, but animals had been a constant part of my life to that point and I daydreamed about having one again. "Free to a good home!" the ads would say, for just about any domestic animal you could want. "Leaving town and can't bring my two friendly cats. Free to a good home." Generally, charities accept gently-used items, especially in the instances of furniture and other household goods, since they’ll be used for resale. In many cases, Goodwill will pick up your donations.
Local “buy nothing” groups
Instead of slumping into passive weight, you’ll be engaged and energizes. You’re posture will naturally get stronger – which also improves your energy levels. If I was super tired in the morning, I would just add an extra 15-minute sit break and deduct it from the end of the day.
The dumpsters near a college dorm are even better than the ones near apartments for a couple of reasons. You never know when you’re going to find free furniture near an apartment dumpster. People move in and out all the time, so you have to check often and hope you get lucky. The biggest key to living furniture free is what you fill that now empty space with.
Admittedly, it wasn’t the holy grail of mood-changers. However, sulking until an eventual Netflix binge never did me any favors. The walk was arguably a better choice, and I never would have done it if I wasn’t forced off of my furniture. Maybe I really had made it over the furniture withdrawal phase and was on my way to a healthier life. I had less difficulty staying focused at work and even had the energy to go on a bike ride that evening. I did feel antsy after dinner, while watching a movie.
Donating items you no longer use is a great way to get organized and make your packing process easier. Different companies have made the process even easier by offering free furniture donation pickup. The Affordable Connectivity Program is designed to help families and households struggling to afford Internet services.
You can save up your gift cards and use them to buy furniture, at no cost. Also, check out this post for a list of online thrift stores. There is a lot of competition, and some credit cards offer cash sign up bonuses. Only do this if you can meet the minimum spend to qualify for the bonus while paying off the balance in full each month.
The Salvation Army helps people in a number of ways, such as by donating items. The Salvation Army is a wonderful organization that helps people in need, such as those who are homeless or veterans. You probably got rid of some of your stuff when you last moved, and everyone else who moves usually does too. If you know someone who is moving, ask if they’re getting rid of any furniture. Check out bulletin boards in coffee shops, grocery stores, or your apartment building to see if anyone is giving away furniture.
There are spring cleaning events in some communities. A particular place, such as a park, is chosen as the location for these events, where residents are invited to take the items they don’t need. Used furniture can be obtained for free at these events! Check out your local community calendar or website for upcoming events. If you know you're moving in a few months start looking for a suitable shelter now. The consequence of a no-kill environment is the potential lack of space and waiting lists.
