Annabelle Comes Home: The real story of The Conjuring doll

The Warrens claim that the doll continued to exhibit haunted behavior while in their care, reportedly levitating. Despite being kept in a facility outside their home, they said that the doll was known to reappear in different areas of their abode. They agreed to allow the spirit occupy the doll, but in turn, things got worse. In another, a sleeping male friend woke up to feelings of being strangled as the doll stared at him.

Before she inspired a hit horror franchise, Annabelle was just another Raggedy Ann doll possessed by a dead girl. The movie's depiction of the doll, however, is a different story altogether. The eyes and face give it a much-needed creepy feel, which is something that Annabelle had to have in order to make the audience believe that it could actually be haunted and, in a way, come to life. The doll swiftly made its true nature known and became a real-life nightmare for the girls.

Donna and Angie gave Annabelle permission to inhabit their doll after the spirit told the medium it felt comfortable living with the girls. (image from hindustantimes.com)Soon after the doll was brought into the home, her new owner and her roommate started noticing some strange activity. This initially started with subtle movements, such as the doll’s legs being crossed. This steadily increased to the point that the doll would be seen in other rooms to where it was earlier left. It was even captured kneeling, which was physically impossible for the doll to later repeat. Annabelle told them that she was a 7-year-old girl who died where Donna and Angie's apartment complex was built.

To a group of Catholic girls’ high school students, Lorraine revealed that the film 'Annabelle', which was a prequel to “The Conjuring,” was indeed fabricated. However, according to Spera, the current museum owner, the rumor is not true. Somehow, when it was translated to Chinese, the story was switched to “Annabelle escaped,” by Hi Tech.

The most crucial thing to remember is that neither the priests nor the victims Angie and Donna told their story; we only know this through Ed and Lorraine, and maybe our only proof of this case. The Warrens acknowledged that they had dealt with the dark force that resides within the doll. The Warrens also described some of the situations and experiences of people who had Annabelle nightmares. A defiant man visiting the museum had heard the tales and began bashing on Annabelle's case, calling on her to scratch him if she was real. An hour later the couple saw the priest off, asking him to call them when he got home.

As a result of the severity of their predicament, the priest directed them to the Warrens. Once Ed and Lorraine Warren were on the Annabelle case, they had a priest do an exorcism on the apartment to cast out any spirits. After the paranormal investigator placed her in the backseat of his vehicle, he claimed he experienced car trouble on his way home, similar to the car trouble seen during the start of Annabelle Comes Home. One morning while the nurses were eating at their breakfast nook, “Annabelle’s two flimsy little cloth arms levitated onto the table,” Spera says. When the startling paranormal activity took place, the nurses were oddly fascinated by the doll. One of the nurses deduced that the doll’s actions meant she was trying to communicate with the roommates, so she called a psychic for advice.

They'd move the doll to Donna's room and it would appear immediately outside Angie's room. The pair claim Annabelle levitated and began attacking them - even attempting to strangle a friend. At the end of The Conjuring 2, the Warrens return home with a souvenir from the adventure — the zoetrope toy that the Hodgson family had, which serves as the anchoring item for the Crooked Man.

In 1952, the Warrens established the New England Society for Psychic Research which would become the hub of their ghost hunting activities. Together, the pair claimed to have investigated over 10,000 hauntings, possessions, and supernatural happenings. To investigate, The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Tony Spera, the real-life Occult Museum curator and son-in-law of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Like the real-life doll, Annbelle's objective is to obtain the souls of others. At the end of the movie, Annabelle is purchased at an antique shop as a gift for a student nurse. This lines up perfectly with the timeline of the real Annabelle, and how it ended up with Donna in 1968. According to information gathered by the real-life Warrens, a student nurse named Donna received the Annabelle doll as a gift from her mother in 1968. Donna and her roommate, Angie, began to notice strange paranormal occurrences.

The unsettling elements were toned down a tad in the Creation story by director David F. Sandberg to make it believable as a child's toy. Lorraine has been back since her husband's death, but can't even look at the doll saying it's the 'worst thing in the whole Museum'. "These are prayers that bind the evil — much like an electric fence for a dog."

The Warrens Claimed Something About Annabelle’s Case

During the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, Wan and Safran revealed the film's events would take place after Annabelle and would focus on the doll after she had been placed in a glass case in the Warrens' museum. Sometime later, the Warrens welcome Mary Ellen, who will be in charge of babysitting their daughter, Judy, at the house while they travel overnight to investigate another case. Mary Ellen's friend, Daniela, arrives uninvited to the Warrens' home, who is secretly curious about speaking to the dead. She sneaks into the artifacts room and starts examining every item, ultimately trying to contact her late father.

Per the Warrens, the doll is occupied by an “inhuman spirit,” and those who approach its glass case are instructed to not touch it. Years ago, the late paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren spoke about uncovering the real story of Annabelle with her late husband Ed Warren, also a paranormal investigator. Today, the Annabelle doll resides within the Warren’s Occult Museum in Connecticut. The doll is displayed within a glass case, lined with crosses and protective bible inscriptions. Annabelle, along with the entire Occult Museum, is also regularly blessed by a priest. Since these troubling events had transpired, the young girls who were living with Annabelle decided to reach out to the church for help.

Apparently, the director and producer were trying to find the perfect balance between “innocence and creep.” Same. The Warrens agreed to take Annabelle home with them and placed the doll in the backseat of their car. During the drive, the car stalled and repeatedly experienced brake and power steering failure, nearly resulting in fatal collisions. After covering the doll in holy water and placing a sign of the cross on top of it, the car disturbances ended and the Warrens were able to arrive home safely.

The Warrens said the spirit, who only pretended to be a young girl in order to con Donna and Angie, was ultimately looking to possess a human body. In order to stupor the spirits attempt, the Warrens had the apartment exorcised by a priest and took the doll with them home to Connecticut. Donna and Angie’s friend Lou was reportedly attacked by Annabelle on several occasions.
