However, there are portions of Annabelle's story that have some basis in truth despite most of it being fictionalized, and the Annabelle true story itself is actually quite interesting. In real life, the Annabelle doll is not wide-eyed and made of porcelain. Or at least, stories that the Warrens claimed were true (your mileage may vary on the whole “ghosts are real” side of things). The films follow investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they unpack paranormal activities, and all of the stories are drawn from what they said at the time were real-life experiences. The creepy porcelain doll made her debut in the very first Conjuringfilm in 2013, later earning her own spinoff in 2014. The first film follows John Form and his expectant wife Mia , who purchase a vintage doll in a white dress to welcome their new baby.
The girls' close friend, Lou, became very nervous around the doll, believing it to be possessed, but they shrugged it off. Donna was living with her friend Angie at the time and was over the moon at her mother's gift, at least to start with. The only thing that's certain is Annabelle's real life tale is proof that sometimes reality is worse than fiction. The entire Conjuring universe draws inspiration from the lives of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two Connecticut paranormal investigators who died in 2006 and 2019, respectively. The couple first rose to prominence in 1975, when they looked into a case in Amityville, New York, involving the Lutz family.

In the nonfiction version of Annabelle, there were two nurses living together in Hartford, Connecticut. One of the nurses was gifted the Raggedy Ann doll by her mother in 1970. Spera believes the mother purchased the doll from a second-hand store. After she received the present, a string of eerie occurrences ensued in the apartment.
The women’s hearts were softened after hearing this story, so they permitted her to live in the doll permanently. Not only that but after getting home from work, Donna and Angie began finding notes with the words ‘Help Me’ left all around the apartment. What’s even creepier is the ladies stated that the note was written on parchment. You’ll have to read on to see if your fears will be faded or probably increased. "For starters, you’d be hard-pressed to find a manufacturer to allow their doll to serve as a conduit to evil in a movie," said Safran.
New Line’s Annabelle and Conjuring films are based on accounts that paranormal researchers claim to be true. But with the latest installment, when the theater lights turn back on, viewers may be left with more questions than answers. Fans have no way of knowing which haunted artifacts presented in the film are based on actual ones, and which are Hollywood ploys for quick jump-scares.
Her husband Tony regularly performs a binding spell on Annabelle too to prevent her from attacking anyone. After one of Donna's friends claimed to have been strangled by the doll, the Warrens became involved in the case. The Warrens took charge of the doll, building a special case to contain the vessel. Judy was an adult and no longer lived with her parents in 1971 when the film is set.

In several instances, Donna would place the doll on the living room couch only to find it in her room on her bed with the door shut. During one of these instances, Donna found the doll on her bed covered in a red liquid substance that appeared to be blood.
